Isn’t it wonderful to explore our past and draw knowledge and inspiration from it for our life today? Let’s take a long journey into the history of our ancient ancestors, in order for us to discover the Delphic Maxims in the depths of the centuries……
Imagine that we are at the center of the world back then, at the Sacred Oracle of Delphi, and we hear the sounds of Pythia’s voice delivering her prophecies to the Kings and Generals who visited her from all over the world! At the foothills of Parnassus, within the imposing landscape, between two enormous rocks. There stood proudly the Temple of Apollo!
Among the most important elements of the sacred space were the so-called Delphic Maxims: these short and concise phrases – sayings, which captured the wisdom of ancient Greek philosophy. The Maxims were engraved on stone surfaces of the temple and functioned as ‘moral and philosophical guides’ for those who visited the oracle. Thus, the oracle provided not only prophecies, but also deeper philosophical guidance, the framework of which was to live with self-knowledge, prudence, and moderation.
The Delphic Maxims were really precious, as they invited visitors to reflect on basic personal matters, such as: self-knowledge, the relation with the Divine and Human Element. Today, the Delphic Maxims continue to provide inspiration for precisely the same topics, which are always the fundamental existential questions for humans: “Who am I?” , “What is the essential purpose of life and what is my own vital need?”, “Is there a Divine Field and if I believe in it, how can I reach it if I want to?” , “Which are the limits I should define in order to bring balance in my relationships with others”, “How can I live my life with prudence, fulfillment and happiness?” …….
Each Delphic Maxim indicates its own direction, and is a wonderful opportunity for us to learn, to think, to adapt to our own lives if we wish, to draw ideas that will transform us positively, according to our needs and desires!
