Delphic Maxims

We all know the famous saying: “Know thyself” – Know yourself – and we have all certainly used it in our conversations!

However, how many of us know that it is one of the 147 Delphic Maxims and actually one of the 3 Delphic Maxims that were inscribed on the pediment of the Apollo Temple in Delphi?

The authorship of its writing is not confirmed; in antiquity it was attributed to various of the Seven Sages, with references to Thales of Miletus, Chilon of Sparta, and Pittacus of Mytilene.

However, the origin of its fame is confirmed to belong to Socrates, because he used it in his teaching (self-knowledge was a cornerstone of Socrates’ philosophy), therefore this led to its spread!

Our ancient ancestors believed that before trying to understand the world, one first needs to understand oneself, which is why this particular saying was engraved at the entrance of the Apollo Temple, in order to encourage visitors to self-knowledge.

The: “Know thyself” – Know yourself, signifies the special value of self-knowledge, which remains a timeless, eternal question, not only of Philosophy and the Arts, but of life itself! The ability to look deeply within ourselves, to recognize and, above all, understand our abilities, accept our weaknesses, decide on our value system and clarify the way we feel and react. It’s all about discovering the truth of ourselves and “embrace” it! Through this inner journey, we can transform any dysfunction and strengthen what makes us feel happy.
